What do I need to do?

Step 1: Train your employees

OASIS C includes many changes. Questions have been added, removed, and modified. Be sure that your staff knows the questions and how to interpret them before they begin using the new assessments.

For resources that you might use in your training, see the previous section of this document titled "Where can I find more information?"

Your employees must be ready to use the new question set by January 1, 2010.

Step 2: Update your software

We strongly recommend that you perform the update by Friday, December 18 to avoid potential holiday delays. The mandate requires that you update no later than December 31. If Patron is hosted by Cyberlink ASP, the 2.26 update will be installed for you the weekend of December 5.

After you have installed the update, Patron will automatically determine which OASIS version is used for an assessment based on question M0090 (Date Assessment Completed). Any assessment with a M0090 date before January 1, 2010 will use OASIS B1, and any assessment with a M0090 date on or after that date will use
OASIS C.

Step 3: Begin using the OASIS C question set

Implementation of OASIS C is required effective January 1, 2010.

What changes will I see?

Questions have been added, removed, and modified for OASIS C, and the Patron interface has changed to support the updated question set. The following examples highlight some of the upcoming changes. We will provide more details about the interface changes at the time of the release.

DISCLAIMER: The examples included on this site are not exhaustive, and do not offer any interpretation of the questions. See the previous section titled “Where can I find more information?” for resources that can help with interpreting and answering assessment questions.

Outcomes Management
Patron has fully integrated the OASIS C question set and its validation checks. You will not be able to see
OASIS C in Patron until January 2010.

M0090 and OASIS Version
For any new assessment after the 2.26 update, a new dialog appears before you select the patient admission.

You must enter M0090 and M0010 to determine which version of the assessment to complete.

OASIS Questions
Following are some examples from Patron of differences between OASIS B1 and OASIS C.

Changed Numbers
Most questions have been assigned new numbers. For example, the patient’s primary diagnosis in OASIS B1 was question M0230. In OASIS C, that question is now M1020.

Modified Questions
Some questions have been modified. For example, question M0400 has been split into two questions, M1210 and M1220.

Question M0450 has been modified and also renumbered as M1308.

Several of the activities of daily living (ADL/IADL) questions no longer track prior status at the individual question level, such as M0640. The prior functioning items have been combined into the new question M1900.

New Questions
Some questions are new in OASIS C, such as M2250.

Episode Master Export
Episode Master is a clinical audit service designed to decrease errors within your patient documentation. Through a licensed module, Patron users submit order and OASIS data to a Lewis FSD server that analyzes the data and creates easy-to-read reports. Reports post to agency-specific Web accounts and are available for download shortly after the data submission. If you are interested in learning more about this service, contact Lewis Sales at (225)709-2000.

For Episode Master subscribers, the OASIS C mandate provides a transition to a faster, easier-to-use system for exporting assessments. In Patron 2.26, a new Episode Master Export module is integrated directly with the program. You no longer need to leave Patron to open the stand-alone export application.

The new export module requires activation and setup by Lewis Implementation. It will export both OASIS versions B and C, so there is no need to wait until January 2010 to begin using it.

The obsolete, stand-alone Episode Master Export program for Patron will not export OASIS C files. You must use the new module to avoid the loss of your reports.

There are no changes to the Episode Master site or the upload system. The layout of the report has not changed, although new audits for OASIS C will appear when appropriate.

Other Program Changes
OASIS-related changes to reports, Episode Management, QA Audit, and other program areas will also be included in the 2.26 year-end release. The full list will be documented in Patron’s release materials, which will accompany the 2.26 CD.
